The Goal Maker

The Goal Maker is a method useful for getting down on paper what want to happen. This method can assist you in examining your goals from all sides and come up with highly workable goals that come from your deeper self. You will require several sheets of paper for this excursion into your future.


Steps to the Goal Maker

1. Goal construction: Goals are what you strongly want from life, others, or yourself. Goals better be clear and specific--something you can measure and chart progress with as you move toward fulfilling them. With goals you want a clear image of what you want and how you will go about getting there. Relax and begin to give your goals your full attention.

2.  What do you want: Jot down the experience you would enjoy having [Career? Social? Family? Relationships? Health? Eating? Exercise? Financial? Self-Improvement? Spiritual? Education? Travel? A move? A new place to live?] Ask your deeper self what you prefer. You may do some left nasal dominance breathing by pinching your right nostril shut and breathing deeply through your left nostril only for 20 inhalations and exhalations. Place your attention on your body and ask it what goal it would like to achieve. When you get a strong feeling about this question, allow your relaxed and open attention to rest there. Ask again what you would want strongly to achieve. Allow your felt sense to provide you with an answer. It may be slow coming at first. It may bubble up as a murky image or some words. An inarticulate feeling at first. Just pay attention and jot down whatever comes. Soon the goal will become sharper and more defined.

3.  Make this goal very clear and specific: Avoid being general. When? Where? With whom? How long will it take? How much? Specify! Specifiy! Specify! You want clear definitions that can be measurable. Example: "I wish to write a self-help book of 1267 typewritten pages and I want to complete it by April 1, 2004. I will type 20 pages per day for at least 6 days a week. I will write between 7 am and 8 am and again from 7 pm to 10 pm. I will know this book's potential markets and I will hustle out query letters and sample drafts to Big Deal Press. Get the picture--clear and very specific.

4.  Write your goal out in positive and realistic terms: You have to write out what you want, not what you don't want. This is quite important. Where are you headed? What do you want to achieve?

5.  What might you see, hear, feel, smell, and taste when you reach your goal: Utilizing all your senses and doing one sense at a time, do a quick check on how your achieved goal might appear and feel. See it. Hear it. Feel it. Smell it and taste it. You might want to breathe through your left nostril only while you gently pinch your right nostril shut for 20 deep inhalations and exhalations. Allow your face and tongue to relax while you focus all your senses on what your achieved goal might appear like and feel like.

6.  Test your initial goal view: Check out your initial goal view. Here are some questions:

Does the goal generate good feelings and passion when you think about it? If it doesn't, you might have a clunker here.
Is this goal do-able by either you, a group under your leadership, or with the help of machines?
Is your goal measurable and specific? Does it fulfill what was asked for in step (3)?
Is your goal written down in sense terms?
Where does this goal occur? Is this the best location for it? Can it be moved to a better location?
What resources might you require?
What have friends, loved ones, or knowledgeable people said about your goal?
What do you lose by taking up this goal?
What do you gain by taking up this goal?
Is there anything blocking the road to your goal? What can you do about this block?
Has anyone else traveled over the same road and reached the same or a similar goal? Might you approach them for their expertise?
Will you be in control of your goal?
Are there educational or training resources that might help you?
How will you notice improvement?
What are the rewards for achieving your goal? Jot them down

7.  See your goal in small steps: View it as mini-objectives strung together. Example: I want to build a new airplane hanger out in my South forty. I will clear the land. Get building permits. Remove power lines. Etc. etc. Resettle my neighbors in internment camps.

8.  Commit yourself to your goal: Repeat your goal commitment to yourself with full intention. "In the name of the Emperor and standing before the Holy Grail, I Tombstone Willie swear allegiance to my goal." If you experience blocks, doubts, and fears at this point check them out for any valuable information. If these doubts prove unfounded, then they can be grist for processing or integration with your favorite Emoclear processes. Then fully commit again with your full feeling.

9.  Is this goal extremely attractive to you? Is this goal extremely attractive to you? Can you feel turned on when you imagine doing it? Does it exert a magnetic pull on you? Does it match up with your deeper values?

10. Is this goal simpatico with the rest of your life: Will this goal interfere with your personal relationships? Will this goal badly stress you or give you health problems? Will it interfere with your family and friends? Your present job? Your hobbies? Will it give you something you don't want? Can any problems here be corrected or problem solved around?

11. See a reasonable time frame to bring this goal to maturity: Set a reasonable date for this goal to be completed. Write the goal completion date down and commit yourself with full intention to that date.

12. Give it the old gravestone test: Is this goal something you'd like folks to remember you by? Would that goal look good on a gravestone? "Here rests Flatfoot Johnson of the Foggy Mountain Highsteppers."

13. List the many ways of doing what is required to be done and see how this might be absorbing and fun: List the many ways of doing what is required to be done and see how doing what better be done can be absorbing and fun. Can you imagine this in steps?

14. Handling obstacles: List potential obstacles and how you will overcome them. If some of the obstacles feel overwhelming, you can process and integrate your feelings.

15. Is there any special knowledge you will have to have in order to obtain your goal:
How will you gain it? What is essential here without being bogged down in details?

16.  List four important reasons why your goal must be accomplished: Jot down these four reasons.

17.  How might you recognize that your goal was achieved? What might specifically demonstrate that your goal worked?

18. How might your goal appear 1 year from now:
Or might it already be a reality?

19. Visualize your goal step by step: Visualize your goal step by step and process or integrate any doubts or counter-intentions that appear. Pay attention to your body for feelings about your goal.

20. After you've completed your goal, how will you know this: Who else will notice? What will others be saying?
